The Kansai International Airport (KIA), which opened in 1994, was the first airport in Japan ever built on artificial island. The air port is located 5 km offshore in southern Osaka. It currently operates on a single 3,500m runway, capable of handling up to 160,000 departures and arrivals per year.

The 4,000m long second runway of KIA took more than 10 years and consumed 9000 billion yen (approximately $13 million) to complete. Total land area claimed for this second phase is 542 hectares. The new runway will start operation on 2 August, 2007. Link
