Joanne Pitchforth, 35, an underwater hockey player, and also a teacher from Yorkshire, set a new world record in 1 minute 35.18 seconds to win the World Bog Snorkelling Championship. The previous world record, set by a man, was 1 minute 35.46 seconds.

Joanne Pitchforth of Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire, beat an international field of 120 competitors, including her husband, Haydn Pitchforth, who came sixth and who was last year's men's winner, to emerge filthy but triumphant.
