Priscilla Bracks's Christ-like bin Laden artwork sparked criticism [Pic]

An artwork depicting Osama bin Laden in a Christ-like pose created by Priscilla Bracks is seen in the annual Blake Prize for Religious Art, at the National Art School in Sydney. Brack's "piece of art" has caused a stir after it was showcased in an Australian religious art competition.

"The choice of such artwork is gratuitously offensive to the religious beliefs of many Australians," Australian Prime Minister John Howard said. Opposition Labor leader Kevin Rudd also criticised the artwork. Australia's 20 million population is overwhelmingly Christian and the print was condemned by the Australian Christian Lobby. "It's really unfortunate people take liberties with the Christian faith they wouldn't take with other religions," Lobby spokeswoman Glynis Quinlan told reporters. [From Metro]
Priscilla Bracks, who created a "double vision" print fusing the images of Jesus Christ and Bin Laden, urged people to refrain from knee-jerk condemnation. Critics assumed that she was drawing similarities between the two bearded figures, she told ABC radio. "But I could actually be saying that it's a juxtaposition of good and evil, which I see as the base level reading of that work." [From The Independent]
