World's largest carpet unveilled in Iran

Iran today unveiled what it said was the world's largest handwoven carpet, worth $US5.8 million ($6.76 million) and bigger than a football pitch, to be laid out in a United Arab Emirates mosque. The carpet contains 38 tonnes of wool and took 1200 weavers 18 months in three villages in northeastern Iran to complete.

The carpet, measuring 5625 square metres, was made up of nine pieces which will be stitched together in the UAE to cover the floor of the central praying area of the massive mosque.

There are 2.2 billion knots in the carpet, which was made with the best wool from the southern Iranian town of Sirjan and from New Zealand in 25 colours using 20 different natural dies, Bassam said. Link

There are enough hooks on the door to hang everything from bags to coats. It encourages you to properly hang them inside the closet since you can’t close the door without unloading everything off the hooks first. Link

Chair changes colour if you're fat

This awesome furniture is called fuwa pica, which loosely translated means 'soft and flashy'. It senses people's presence via the built-in pressure senors, then gradually changes colour accordingly.

Kanaya and his team, working out of the university's Mongoose Studio, designed a round table that has a computer and built-in LCD display and four air-cushioned chairs.

The table and chairs are linked to each other via a wireless signal. Colour sensors in the table scan objects placed on top to determine their hue and then the computer sends a signal to the chair to match the colour of the object.

The brightness is controlled by pressure sensors inside the chair. These measure the air pressure and send that information to the table's computer. The higher the pressure, the brighter the colour.

The interactive set, which could be in shops, airports, museums, or bars within a year or two, uses technology to extend people's emotional state into a room that may be devoid of ancient ideas. Link

And for anyone keen to find out what their own cat gets up to on its prowls, Mr Perthold is selling catcams on his website for approximately £23. Link

Why thin people dislike fat people

Scientists claim that thinner humans have an inbuilt dislike of fat people because of ancient fears that they may be diseased.

Researchers found that the mere sight of someone who is overweight can trigger feelings of disgust and nausea similar to encountering rotten food.

The research, reported in the journal Evolution and Human Behaviour, claims that our brains have evolved to react to outward signs of disease, such as rashes and wounds, because bacteria and viruses are invisible. Unfortunately, these signals also include excessive body fat. Link

A 97-feet Horace Burgess's treehouse

Horace Burgess's treehouse may be as close to heaven as a body can get in Cumberland County. It rises 97 feet into the sky, the support provided by a live, 80-foot-tall white oak 12 feet in diameter at its base. Six other trees brace the tower-like fortress, but Burgess says its foundation is in God.

"I built it for everybody. It's God's treehouse. He keeps watch over it," said Burgess, who received his inspiration in a vision that came to him in 1993. "I was praying one day, and the Lord said, 'If you build me a treehouse, I'll see you never run out of material."'

The treehouse has 10 floors, averaging nine to 11 feet in height by Burgess's reckoning. He has never measured its size but estimates it to be about 8,000 to 10,000 square feet. He did count the nails that he has hammered into the wood — 258,000, give or take a few hundred. And he guesses he has sunk about $12,000 into the project. Link

Is 'Cairo toe' the world's first prosthetic limb?

Academics want to test an ancient fake big toe to see if it really did help its owner to "walk like an Egyptian".

They have made a replica of the "Cairo toe", a bending leather and wood body part which they believe could be the world’s earliest practical prosthetic.

Now they are seeking volunteers who themselves lack a right big toe, to test their theory that it actively helped its original user to walk.

Jacky Finch, lead researcher at Manchester University’s KNH Centre for Biomedical Egyptology, said the fact that it showed signs of wear indicated it was a practical limb. It was found strapped to the mummified foot of a 50- to 60-year-old woman who had undergone a toe amputation.

"The toe dates from between 1069 and 664BC, so if we can prove it was functional then we will have pushed back prosthetic medicine by as much as 700 years," she said. Link
