Bosses at Oldham Council have banned staff from wearing flip-flops and sandals to work, citing health and safety fears. They fear people who wear the flimsy footwear are more likely to trip and injure themselves. Further more, flip-flops are not considered suitable footwear for any council employee when at work.

But they have met strong opposition from workers, say the move is 'health and safety gone mad'. The ban was approved this week under the council's 'Spills, Trips and Falls policy'.
