"Cock" is banned on RSPB's website

Strutting proudly round the barnyard or twittering in the trees, he is king of the birds. But the cock is no longer welcome among the birdwatching fraternity, it seems.

The word, which has been used to describe male birds for centuries, has been all but banned from the website run by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

The charity has decided to avoid the term wherever possible to spare the blushes of its more delicate subscribers.

...It is not political correctness. The issue is words that can be used in an offensive context and we should not forget that the RSPB website has a massive viewing from young children.

The word is also hard to spot on the RSPB’s main website, where profiles of different species refer to "males" and "females", rather than "cocks" and "hens".

The charity said although it had not banned the word it tried to use it sparingly.
