Algae blooms in Dianchi Lake, China

A new blue-green algae bloom was found smothering Dianchi Lake in Kunming, southwest China's Yunnan Province on Sunday.

The algae pollution broke out after the city had undergone a couple of steaming humid days. Algae-plagued water in the lake, as sticky as green paint, rolled towards the Haigeng beach, emitting a foul odor in the air.

Temperature rises in summer days and an excess of nutrients in the water are believed to have caused the algae bloom in the lake.

Dianchi Lake, located in Kunming, is the source of drinking water for local residents in the provincial capital and one of the best known tourist spots in the country.
